I took a girls trip with a friend for my birthday to Costa Rica and wanted a more “authentic” experience, so I decided to rent a house in a local neighborhood. The house was beautiful. It was a 2 bedroom suite, large living area, huge backyard and private pool. Each bedroom had a private jacuzzi. To get to the second bedroom we had to leave out thru the backyard and walk around to the other side. So we pretty much had our own home. We spent our first day taking in sights and decided to turn in early to get some rest.
So after taking a very relaxing bath in the jacuzzi, I got in the bed and attempted to sleep. It was very hard to sleep with the sounds of wild life around me (I’m a city girl). It sounded as if something was in the room with me. I had never been so scared to close my eyes lol. I got up, turned on the lights hoping to see what was making the noise…I saw nothing. I turned the lights off and the noise started again. I turned the lights on and the noise stopped. This was a vicious cycle that I couldn’t get out of lol! I didn’t want my girl to know I was scared to sleep alone in the room, but I couldn’t stay in there by myself. So I decided to check on her, in her room. I walked down the stairs and see here curled up with a blanket on the sofa lol. She saw me and said, she couldn’t sleep in her room alone because of all the nature sounds. I started laughing and told her I couldn’t either, so I ran back up and grabbed my pillow and blanket and slept on the other sofa. The next day we discovered that the sounds we heard were iguanas running on the roof.
This experience made me realize two important things. 1. I’m truly a city girl 2. Even though I love to experience the local culture of the place I’m visiting, when it’s time to go to sleep I don’t want to feel like I’m sleeping at a campsite (not saying anything is wrong with camping, but as I said, I’m a city girl)
I decided to start a blog about my experiences while traveling, to help out others. Maybe you have been wanting to travel like a local, but you’re not sure if that would work for you. Or maybe you just want some ideas of places to go and things to do when you get there. Or maybe you just want to live thru me right now. Whatever the reason, I’m glad you decided to check out my blog.
